  Leadership Development Programme

The Leadership Development Programme, a series of four, one day modules, has been designed for existing managers from across a range of organisations from manufacturing, commercial and the public sector. Its aim is to broaden management perspective, develop a wider perception and enhance overall performance as a manager.

A strength of the programme is the diversity of work experience and expertise brought together and the interaction which takes place between participants. An objective of the programme is to provide an environment for reflection on theory and best practice and then encourage analysis and planning for individual and organisational development.

Learning on the part of individuals should not be confined to single one-off events and while these modules can be taken on an individual basis, when they are taken as a whole they can become a key vehicle contributing to career development for managers.

Day 1 - Managing Self Module

Managing Self is designed to enable participants to explore their own experiences in relation to their current role and provide the opportunity to examine why they interact in the way they do.

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is used as part of the module to provide a framework for self development and an awareness of the impact that participants have on others, particularly in relation to communication and self management.

At the end of the module participants will be better able to:

  • Identify expectations of their current role
  • Recognise how their own preferences influence their working style
  • Develop appropriate communication strategies
  • Understand and apply a range of influencing styles
  • Manage their own learning and development
  • Manage their learning and development of their team / working group
  • Develop an achievable personal development plan for themselves and others

Day 2 - Leading Teams Module

Leading Teams is designed to explore what is needed to successfully lead a team in today’s complex working environment.

The module will utilise both participants’ own experiences and appropriate models to provide a vehicle for enhancing understanding.

Participants will have the opportunity to consider further development for both themselves and their teams.

At the end of the module participants will be able to:

  • Identify what makes a successful team
  • Recognise the different types of contributions needed for a successful team
  • Manage the growth of their team
  • Understand how their behaviour affects the performance of their team
  • Adapt their natural style to manage the concept of team dynamics thereby improving the overall team performance.
  • Plan their own development in relation to managing their team

Day 3 - Managing Others Module

Managing Others will look at the role of the manager in managing the performance of their team within the context of the business’s objectives.

It will look at the impact the style of the manager has on the team and its performance and will consider how performance can be both directed and monitored going forward.

At the end of the module participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the benefits of effectively managing performance
  • Set practical focussed business objectives for individuals
  • Effectively manage and monitor performance
  • Provide constructive feedback on performance
  • Develop their staff to support increased performance
  • Describe the concept of talent management
  • Plan their own development in relation to managing the performance of others

Day 4 - Leading Change Module

Leading Change is designed to explore the impact of change and the approaches that can be taken to successfully manage its impact.

A focus for the day will be the participants own experience and the examination of appropriate change management tools.

It is intended that the programme will enable participants to develop a conceptual understanding but one that is grounded in personal experience and has practical relevance.

At the end of the module participants will be better able to:

  • Recognise their own feelings towards change
  • Identify and explain the key triggers for change
  • Recognise and manage barriers to change
  • Understand and manage individual’s resistance to change
  • Use a range of diagnostic tools to review internal and external situations
  • Plan and implement change within their areas
  • Plan their own development in relation to managing change
