There are three ways to edit the contents of an existing cell.

* Press F2

* Click in the Formula bar at the top of the screen

* Double-click the cell to be edited

If double-clicking does not work, it's because 'Edit directly in Cell' has been disabled.

In Excel 2003, choose Tools, Options, Edit tab, and re-instate the option. In Excel 2007 it's Office Button, Excel Options, Advanced, Allow editing directly in cells.

I personally prefer to not edit in cells, as often the text gets too small on the sheet, and with the option off, double-clicking a cell selects the cells referenced by that formula. Great for linked files.
